Get counted: USDA floriculture survey heads to all 50 states

Certified American Grown’s advocacy team asked and they have been heard. The Floriculture survey has received the largest expansion to date. Below is information provided by USDA-NASS based upon their efforts to ensure that all domestic farms be counted.  Please see the information they have shared and participate in the survey to make sure they have the best industry data possible.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will mail the Commercial Floriculture Survey on December 23 to more than 13,000 producers nationwide. Growers, buyers, government agencies and others can use the data to identify state and national trends, plan the future of their business, and determine the industry’s impact on farm incomes and on the economy. The data will be published in the Floriculture Crops report on May 25, 2022.

NASS encourages producers to respond online at agcounts.usda.gov, by mail, or phone. If NASS does not receive your completed survey by Tuesday, February 15, 2022, they may contact you to arrange a telephone interview. The information producers provide will be used for statistical purposes only. In accordance with federal law, responses will be kept confidential and will not be published in identifiable form.

This year’s survey looks different from recent years. NASS reviewed the annual floriculture program, as is typically done after the Census of Horticultural Specialties. The Census of Horticultural Specialties is conducted every five years as a special study of the Census of Agriculture, a complete count of America’s farms and farmers and a chance for producers to shape the future of U.S. agriculture.

In recent years, the survey covered the 17 main producing states. This year, it will cover all 50 states, with the top 28 (AL, AK, CA, CT, CO, FL, GA, HI, IL, IN, IA, MD, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY, NC, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI) published individually and the remaining states combined into an “other states” total. No sampling will occur in the non-published states for operations with sales control data below $100,000. Estimates for the $10,000 – $100,000 operations in these states will be carried forward from the most recent Census of Horticultural Specialties.

This floriculture survey is a census of commercial floriculture operations that annually produce and sell at least $10,000 worth of fresh cut flowers, potted flowering plants, foliage plants, annual bedding and garden plants, herbaceous perennials, cut cultivated florist greens, propagative floriculture material and unfinished plants. This year’s survey adds 24 individual crops to the program, including peppers, herbs, lavender as well as cacti and succulents.

The report will provide the number of operations, area of production, quantity sold, and average number of agricultural workers per operation.
