Las Cruces will be host to gardeners from across the U.S. and Canada April 11-16 as the American Iris Society celebrates 100 years of existence.
The Mesilla Valley Iris Society is organizing the national convention this year at Hotel Encanto with trainings and demonstrations where attendees can learn how to grow various iris types, as well as a tour of six local iris gardens. Society chapters from across the country will be participating.
The AIS was founded in the 1920s with the mission to educate communities on the iris plant along with preserving it and fostering its continued development and enjoyment.
The local chapter of the society will simultaneously celebrate its 50th year. According to Jacqueline Pountney, vice president of the MVIS, over 200 people have signed on for the convention so far.
