The final production value is determined by the total production and price of agricultural and horticultural products. The total area, the production per hectare and the price are the most important variables. Ornamental plant cultivation can be roughly divided into flowers & ornamental plants and tree nurseries, although it is difficult to draw a clear line. Flower and ornamental plant cultivation specifically can be done both in the open and under shelter.
The Flemish ornamental plant sector is very diverse and therefore difficult to analyze. The production value varies in the period 2010-2020 between EUR 489 and 536 million. In 2020, the production value decreased from €535 million to €511 million, a decrease of -4%. The COVID-19 pandemic is partially to blame for this.
The flower and ornamental plant sector include bedding and balcony plants, azalea, potted chrysanthemums, houseplants, flower bulbs and tubers, etc. The tree nursery sector includes flowering and non-flowering shrubs, perennials, solitary and avenue trees, roses, and fruit trees, forest and hedging plants.
