China’s horticulture sector is growing very rapidly, but it’s not all about tomatoes! In fact, in Jinan, Shandong province, a new pot flower production greenhouse complex was put into use last month. This includes a 4ha glasshouse, a 2ha film greenhouse, and around 2000 square meters for demonstration, packing, control rooms, etc.
“The project started at the beginning of last year,” says Mr.Liang, the PM from Kingpeng. “Last month, it became operational.” Keeping up with the momentum of China’s horticulture, as well as the increasing demand for flowers and pot plants, a complex such as this one is necessary for growers who want to tackle the flower market in Eastern and Northern China, says Liang. “The complex is fully equipped with automated logistic systems, from seeds to cut flowers. It’s definitely different from other flower projects we worked on in China.”
In the glasshouse, there are 4 different areas for breeding. Three of these use ebb/flood bench systems for potted flowers, while the remaining area is used for seedlings. On the other hand, in the film greenhouse, mesh benches are utilized. From the service area, growers can control everything that is happening in every area.
Considering how impressive the technology in the complex is, setting it all up wasn’t a walk in the park, especially with a global pandemic going on. “It’s crucial for growers to have their projects up and running in a timely fashion,” they point out. “With the pandemic, though, there are some factors that you just can’t control, with regards to logistics and sourcing raw materials, for instance.”
Despite that, over the past three years, Kingpeng has worked on quite some flower greenhouse projects, especially in Yunnan. “This area is perfect for flower growing,” they say. “Generally speaking, this is one of the biggest flower production areas in China.”
The demand also seems to be growing together with the number of projects, and Liang expects more of them to come online. “There is an increasing demand for flowers in China because of the improvement of people’s living standards and the awareness of the health benefits of flowers. We think that there are going to be much more flower greenhouses in the future, as they will be needed.”
