Evaluation of gladiolus genotypes in Nepal

Promising selected gladiolus genotypes were evaluated at farmer's field, Malepatan, Pokhara of Nepal in the first week of March 2020 and the last week of February 2021. The experiments were laid out in a Randomized completely block design with three replications. The crop geometry was maintained at 50 cm × 28.5 cm in a four-meter square plot containing twenty-eight corms per plot.

Eight genotypes were evaluated. Vegetative, floral and corm characteristics were evaluated. During the first year, spike emergence was found to be the earliest (66 DAS) in the genotype HRSDG-013-9.12(A-2). The highest (19.33) no. of florets per spike was found inHRSDG-013-2.17 (A) which was at par with HRSDG-013-9.12(A-2)(16.66). The highest (89.33 cm) length of the spike was found for HRSDG-013-11.7(B).

During the second year, the first (74 days) spike emergence was found in the genotype HRSDG-013-9.12(A-2). The highest (18.46) number of florets per spike was found in genotype HRSDG-013-11.7(B). The highest (131.4 cm) spike length was found for the genotype HRSDG-013-7.8(A). From the pooled result of the two-year experiment, the earliest(70 DAS) spike emergence genotype was for HRSDG-013-9.12(A-2) which was significantly earlier than the check genotypes. The highest (17) number of florets per spike was found in genotypes HRSDG-013-2.17 (A) and the longest (109.5 cm) length of the spike was recorded for genotype HRSDG-013-7.8 (A).

In comparison with check genotypes, recorded parameters were found significantly better in the tested genotypes. There were variations in flower color in each genotype. Some of the genotypes can be submitted for registration and can be promoted for commercial production.
