A memo, sent to graduate students on a University of East Anglia-based program sparks indignation among the research community. Graduate students struggling to survive the cost of living crisis have been advised by their university to take on extra work fruit-picking or making deliveries.
PhD students on a University of East Anglia-based research program, which aims to create “leaders in the science and sustainable business of the natural environment” were sent the memo on Wednesday. The suggestions, put together by a careers adviser, were sent to students at the university’s Advanced Research and Innovation in the Environmental Sciences doctoral training partnership.
One former PhD student said: “It’s insulting and as if they don’t really care. I think the reality is that PhD students aren’t taken very seriously in this country. “
