The recent extreme summer weather places huge demands on Europe's growers and crops. New techniques are also needed, as people ask, 'How do you keep greenhouses cool?'
Thanks to external screens, growers do not necessarily have to find something new for this. Peter Dekker Installations has been supplying these for about ten years. This Dutch screen installer sees that as summer temperatures rise, so does the demand for external screens.
An external screen does exactly what the name suggests, explains sales representative Jeroen de Jonge in a LinkedIn video. "The screen is fitted to the greenhouse's exterior."
The clip shows an external rolling screen on a widespan greenhouse. It unfurls across the structure's roof. "The grower, thus, keeps unwelcome heat and irradiation out."
External screens' major advantage is that it gives growers more flexibility than chalking or coating. After all, you can roll up a screen in no time, whereas once you chalk a greenhouse, it stays in place for a while.
Extreme weather sometimes also (unfortunately) includes extreme precipitation. During a heavy downpour, Jeroen advises the screens be kept closed. "Once they're dry, you can retract them," he says.
You can, theoretically, use external screens for various kinds of greenhouses. However, the installation differs. "There are also external screens for Venlo greenhouses, but they're a little more complicated."
"The screens are placed horizontally over the greenhouse's apex." You can even place external screens on the sides of greenhouses. "Then we install exterior twin roll screens," Jeroen concludes.
