2022 Year Overview: 10 stories on greenhouse expansion

In 2022, many greenhouses sprouted all over the world. Despite every grower having to deal with tough challenges such as high commodity prices, high energy prices, high shipping costs, a lack of labor, many managed to complete their expansion plans and scale up their businesses. Here are 10 stories on who did what and where.

Ecuador: Greenhouse construction Forever Flowers complete

In January 22, greenhouses of Forever Flowers, is based in Cayambe, Ecuador were finished. The farm is a project of Santiago Partnership, a U.S. non-profit organization founded by Joel and Kim Delp, who together came to Ecuador as missionaries and set up the Santiago Partnership.  The Santiago Partnership serves in collaboration with the local foundation FACE which administrates everything in Cayambe.

Esmeralda Farms acquires Sande Flowers
In May 2022, Esmeralda Farms announced their acquisition of Sande Farms, in turn expanding their greenhouse acreage. With this acquisition they gained 200 hectares of land which allowed them for the increased production of in-demand Esmeralda varieties. This acquisition—which included Sande’s variety portfolio and its operations in Ecuador and the United States— began on June 1, 2022.

Henda Flowers starts construction of new greenhouse
In Zuilichem, the construction of Henda Flowers' new greenhouse started last June,22. The Dutch chrysanthemum grower has purchased a plot of land on which a new greenhouse of about 6 hectares will be built. In week 49, the first cuttings should be set up.

Pioneer Flower Farms celebrates 50th anniversary, opens new greenhouse after fire  
Not a directly an expansion, but it still fits this list; the new greenhouse of Pioneer Flower Farms. "Make Pioneer great again." That was the title of the group chat that the Sikking family created almost immediately after the disastrous fire at their facility in 2019. Together with suppliers, plans were quickly made at Pioneer Flower Farms. They decided not to throw in the towel but to build an even better, modern facility.

 

Colombia: Flores El Capiro expands with 28 ha and invests in solar panels

Colombian chrysanthemum grower Flores El Capiro started in August 2020 with their dream of establishing another production unit near the Cerro El Capiro of La Ceja Antioquia. Over the last two years, they realized their dream and completed the construction of this production unit and reached a total of 28 ha under a greenhouse in San Sebastián. In total, they now have 123 hectares cultivated, divided over eight production units, 230 million stems planted per year, employ 2,500 people, and have shipped 9,308 containers around the world.

NL: A peek inside the new 10ha chrysanthemum greenhouse of UGrand
The first chrysanthemum cuttings were planted in week 46, 2019, and at the end of January 2022 the first stems were harvested. The new 10ha greenhouse of UGrand, a joined project by growers MG Grand and Van Uffelen Flowers, is a stunning piece of horticulture we had the pleasure of visiting. Farm manager Dennis Ammerlaan took us on a tour.  

J. Huete International builds 3.5 hectares of greenhouses for Barberet & Blanc

In June 2022, an article was published that J. Huete International was developing a high-tech greenhouse project for Barberet & Blanc, part of the Dümmen Orange group. The company is a specialist in selecting and producing ornamental plants, with more than fifty years of experience and exports to more than sixty countries. It is 3.5 hectares located in the Region of Murcia, where intelligent greenhouses are being installed for the production of plant material for floriculture.

Millions of roses are growing in brand new greenhouses in Siberia
In January 2022, we published an article about roses grown in new greenhouses in Siberia; "It is an important project for our region and the results are impressive – almost seven million roses have been grown near Novosibirsk, in Siberia", says the Governor of the Novosibirsk Region, A.A. Travnikov. During a working trip to the Novosibirsk greenhouse complex on January 26, the Governor was shown the work of a section of varietal roses created as part of the second stage of the Siberian Rose investment project.

NL: expansion for Bloemen Young Plants 
Bloemen Young Plants, formerly Kwekerij Maarten Bloemen, has received a new expansion. The ornamental plant grower from Venhorst has commissioned a new greenhouse and outdoor field of around 1.5 hectares. "The company was far too tightly packed. With this expansion, we can accommodate 1 million more plants."

Chinese rose grower finishes steel guttered greenhouse expansion

Baiyi Yinong Investment Company is a leading flower-producing company in west China. In 2020, Baiyi launched the 1st 4ha rose project in Linxia, China. The plan was committed to applying the most advanced Dutch technology to China, providing first-class flower products for the growing Chinese flower market, and using the Internet to optimize the flower industry chain.
