Harley Eskelund, Roses Forever, visits grower in Malaysia:

"Meeting our growers personally is very important”

For over 20 years, Roses Forever has been active in Asia, and over the years, they have expanded their presence in different countries. They often visit their growers, and Harley Eskelund recently returned from a trip to Malaysia, where he visited a grower to exchange experiences on both cultivation and the possible construction of new greenhouses. "Meeting them personally is very important. We always visit a new grower before the license agreement, and afterwards, we start supplying the start-up cuttings and share all the know-how."

Expanding in Asia
Roses Forever first started delivering start-up cuttings in Japan 22 years ago, then entered Malaysia and Korea 8 years later, then China 2 years later, and most recently, 4 years ago, they started sending start-up cuttings to growers in Vietnam. In China and Malaysia, the Love Forever pot roses are the most successful, whereas, in Japan, they prefer the Infinity pot roses.

"The Love Forever pot roses are so successful in China and Malaysia due to their strong colors, short culture time, and the fact that they are easy to grow when you have the 'Growers Manual' and after visiting our breeding location in Denmark," says Rosa Eskelund of Roses Forever and breeder of this line. "In Japan, on the other hand," she continues, "They prefer the Infinity roses as they really stand out compared to the ordinary potted rose. In this country, they love the pastel colors in this line, the extra long shelf life, it is more of a luxurious product, still easy to grow and has a production time of only 9-10 weeks."

Personal contact
Personal contact is important, explains Harley. "Either when it is at their location, at our breeding facility in Denmark, or at an exhibition. When visiting a grower, we always discuss the cultivation techniques. There are always new small changes that may increase the grower's profit. Also, new varieties are shown, and we exchange experiences."

Large expansion in China
Demand goes up and down in Asia, but in China, a grower just doubled its production in China, Harley explains. "Covid made production difficult for the Chinese, but now, everything is getting back to normal. I can't wait to go to China again because it was not open yet. Fortunately, we will see them and more of our Asian growers at the IPM Essen."
