In January 2022, Parfum Flower Company visited Tambuzi Garden Roses in Kenya. In recognition of climate justice for all, they wanted to understand the most pressing needs of the employees of Tambuzi, and what came to light was their need for water.
Why water tanks are needed
Tambuzi has been growing garden-cut roses in Burguret for over 25 years. In that time, they have seen a change in the predictability of rainfall. "The overall annual amount has not changed (although, of course, there are dry years). But the manner in which it falls has become far more difficult to rely on. As a farm, Tambuzi has tackled this challenge by rainwater harvesting and increasing the storage in their dams."
The challenge for the Tambuzi employees
However, the challenge is also there for their employees. "They need to find ways to store water after the rains so that they can be less dependent on the increasingly overused rivers. As Tambuzi is further off the beaten track, many of its employees live in rural areas, meaning it isn't possible to get them connected to the municipal water schemes."
What is the Tambuzi Water Tank project
Together with the Shared Value Committee, Parfum Flower Company came up with the concept of the Tambuzi Water Tank project. "This isn't just providing water tanks but also ensuring these are installed properly. Meaning they are plumbed in with gutters to catch rainwater, downpipes, and taps to be able to use the water."
"Our goal for our Tambuzi Water Project is to donate 250 tanks. If you would like to contribute, please click on this link. If your company donates €170, this covers a whole tank installation, and we can add your logo to the tank. However, if you wish to donate a smaller amount to our overall project, please know this will help massively too."
