Energy prices forcing NA growers to look to Europe for energy saving possibilities

Energy is one of, if not the biggest, challenge for commercial greenhouse and indoor growers today. Rising prices and fluctuations make it increasingly difficult for growers to stay in business and to continue planting new crop cycles as expected.

Energy rates in North America, where energy was previously considered relatively cheap, have risen dramatically over the past year. So, while growers in Europe have grown accustomed to this over several years, many American and Canadian farmers are just now being hit with the importance of efficiency.

Taking an example from Europe
Fortunately, growers in Canada and the U.S. don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Many are already looking to growers in Europe for an example of how they can save energy without compromising on cultivation.

One piece of machinery that has been popularized in Europe over the past years as an energy-saving technology is dehumidification. Solutions such as DryGair have played a large role in changing the way energy is used in modern greenhouses and grow rooms.

How Dehumidifiers Actually Save Energy
It’s important to understand that saving energy isn’t just about incorporating efficient equipment. It’s a shift in mindset that prioritizes efficiency and optimizes cultivation around these cutting-edge technologies. Which is exactly the trend growers in places such as the Netherlands have been following over the past several years.

For example, dehumidifiers may improve cultivation simply by being switched on. However, their true benefit is in reducing the need for ventilation. With proper dehumidification, you don’t need to ventilate to get rid of moisture. So you can keep the space completely closed and insulated. In the case of DryGair, this has been shown to save as much as 70% on heating costs in commercial grow spaces.

That’s where efficiency truly lies and is the reason governments around the world support such products through subsidies and financing programs. Energy-saving equipment, such as DryGair, is also supported by various programs aimed at reducing agriculture’s energy footprint in the U.S. and Canada.

As time passes, these technologies continue to evolve, adapting to growers’ needs and improving their efficiency. The need to reduce energy requirements in horticulture is likely to remain. Growers who are quick to adapt are already reaping the benefits of more streamlined cultivation at a lower operating cost.

Meet DryGair at Indoor Ag-Con 2023
DryGair will be presenting their solution at the upcoming Indoor Ag-Con in Las Vegas. They will be represented by Bellpark Automation Solutions and Adept Ag at stall #924.

You may also schedule a meeting ahead of time to discuss your energy savings and climate control needs with DryGair VP Ziv Shaked through the DryGair website.
