Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) indicated that in Mexico, during 2021, more than 14 thousand hectares were registered for greenhouses, which represents 31% of the area occupied for protected agriculture nationwide. "This type of agriculture also contributed to positioning our country as an export power and encouraged the raising of quality standards and the use of more environmentally friendly technology and fuels, which would allow to take maximum advantage of the raw materials used in the crops," explained Fernando Castro, Deputy Commercial Director of Énestas Mexico. This Mexican company is specialized in building the infrastructure and logistics necessary to transport raw materials and fuels.
"The three most important elements of a greenhouse are water, plants or seeds, and heating. The latter plays an indispensable role for crops to grow in a safe and favorable environment. In this sense, fuels such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are ideal for maintaining a uniform and stable temperature inside the greenhouse, providing various benefits to production."
According to the specialist, another of the advantages of LNG to optimize crop development and generate better financial results for medium and high technology greenhouses, in which tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers predominate, are the savings in fuel costs of up to 30% and 50% less in equipment maintenance costs, thanks to its cleaner combustion, which translates into greater profitability, and efficiency.
"Our vision is to create competitive access to raw materials and fuels, contributing to the country's development by offering safer, more efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly solutions for more companies to meet their business objectives while decreasing their carbon footprint," added Fernando Castro.
Finally, the protected agriculture sector in Mexico generates around 39 million tons of fruits and vegetables annually with a value of more than 2,052 million dollars*, while its exports reach 5.8 million tons with a value of 7,843 million dollars (Exchange rate $19 pesos).
