Colombia: How was Dianthus Week 2023?

With an export value of around US$255 million (between January and November 2021), which represents over 46 thousand tons and around 1,550 million stems, the carnation is the second most exported cut flower in Colombia. So, an important flower to receive its own event.

Last week, Dianthus Week took place, where nine breeders demonstrated the progress that they achieved in breeding. The event took place, with the support of Asocolflores, in Cundinamarca, where they welcomed growers and buyers from many countries, including Colombia, Korea, the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, and more.

Export markets
Colombia has 8,900 hectares planted in flowers for export, 12% of which are carnations. The main export market for carnations is the United States, with a share of 43% in volume, followed by Japan with 16%, the Netherlands with 11%, and Poland and Spain with 6% and 5%, respectively.

Exports growing
The carnation exports are growing, and when comparing the period between January and November 2022 with that of the same period in 2021, the exports increased by 13% in value and 16% in volume.
