India: 50 women entrepreneurs active in orchid floriculture attend meeting

To strengthen women bio-entrepreneurs, the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), through its orchid floriculture project, organized a program at the Orchidarium in Upper Shillong. The program was attended by 50 beneficiaries who shared their experiences and were made acquainted with the Orchidarium and research facilities of the institute and the way forward for entrepreneurial success.

The orchid floriculture project is implemented by the IBSD and supported by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) through the Department of Biotechnology in collaboration with Bio Resource Development Centre (BRDC) in Shillong, India. 

The project is implemented through a 'Hub and Spokes' model at Umsning Block in Ri-bhoi. During the program, IBSD Director, Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, emphasized the capacity of the hundred women bio-entrepreneurs of Ri-Bhoi, an aspirational district of Meghalaya, in collaboration with BRDC. He praised them for coming up with novel entrepreneurial concepts unique to the region and talked about the expansion of the same model in other parts of Meghalaya.

Sister Merlytom Kazhakayil from Fernando Institute of Inclusive Education, Umsning, spoke about the various activities for societal benefit and livelihood generation.
