Bremkens Orchids, a German nursery that is known for the production of young phalaenopsis plants, will soon start selling 9cm phalaenopsis finished plants in large quantities for middle and large retail stores in Europe. "We have the knowledge of growing finished plants, and we can easily deliver large quantities. And to get our feet on the ground in this new segment, Wouter Konijn joined our team", says Christian Bremkens, owner of Bremkens Orchids.

Wouter has more than 15 years of commercial experience in the large retail industry and always focused on the sales of phalaenopsis. "He knows the needs of the retailers and consumers in this product category and noticed that, due to the recent developments in the phalaenopsis sector, there is good potential for 9cm phalaenopsis. For this reason, we decided to start producing this pot size", says Christian.
So what are the advantages for retailers? Wouter: "We see that costs, including that of transportation, are increasing, and when supplying 9cm phalaenopsis, more plants will fit on a trolley when compared to the 12cm ones, the size that is still dominating the market. On top of that, Bremkens can easily supply large quantities and in color mixes that retailers are used to receiving."
And what about the end consumer? "From experience, I know that consumers are enjoying the blooms of the phalaenopsis regardless of pot size," he says. "And we make sure to use the best varieties. Our assortment will consist of around 15 to 20 varieties, and we will continuously innovate and improve it to offer a color mix with the best quality plants", adds Christian.
At Bremkens, all the techniques and knowledge to grow these large quantities of finished plants are available. "We are in the process of shifting to LED completely to be as sustainable as possible." At the beginning of October, they plan to have the first plants ready for delivery.
