Evanthia expands into a new location

Since its establishment in 2013, Westland’s breeding company Evanthia has grown substantially. In addition to breeding and seed production in cut flowers and pot and bedding plants, Evanthia also offers a wide range of tropical plants, for which the demand for starting material has strongly increased. To continue meeting demand and quality and to increase efficiency, the company acquired 2 hectares of adjoining property at the production site on Oranjesluisweg in ‘s-Gravenzande, the Netherlands. Following the completion of an extensive renovation, Evanthia took the new greenhouses into use this month to grow young plants for a now global customer base.

According to Ron de Lange, managing director of Evanthia, the opportunity to expand the location was too good to miss: “With the decision to divest external rental locations and connect the neighboring hectares, the production process of our young plants takes place at one central location. With this, we not only achieve a major efficiency gain. The location on Oranjesluisweg now extends all the way to Groeneweg in ‘s-Gravenzande and offers us new opportunities on our own ‘green way’ into the future. The connected greenhouses have been completely renovated, specifically tailored to growing our young plants, and equipped with facilities for a more sustainable way of growing.”

“We have 4 new units that are completely separately controllable in terms of climate. The new greenhouses have 3 different screening units, and we are making the switch to LED lighting. A new insect netting system has been installed, which keeps unwanted insects out and allows us to greatly reduce the use of crop protection products. At the same time, we keep beneficial insects inside, and the system ensures minimal light loss and maximum ventilation. In addition, the CHP and the future connection to geothermal heat of the entire site ensure that we can use energy more efficiently.”

For customers and suppliers, the familiar main entrance and loading docks on Oranjesluisweg will remain the correct routing for logistics. Interested parties wishing to come and see the new extension are cordially invited to make an appointment with Evanthia’s team for a personal tour.
