The gensets of Boer Berkel, as J.F. Boer Aanhangwagens en Stroomaggregaten is popularly known, go all over the world. Although chicken and pig farmers are also part of his clientele, horticulture still accounts for the largest share at around 70 percent. "Both sales, rentals, and repairs continue to do well. Last year, the war in Ukraine suddenly created additional demand. But the busiest period is traditionally just before Christmas. That's when the greenhouse is empty, and horticulturists want to make the last investments," Hans Boer knows.
The gensets repaired in the workshop can now be found all over the world. Dutch horticulturists who have spread worldwide return to Boer Berkel for their power security. "In the past, horticulturists could get by just fine with lower capacities of up to 100 kVA. Those generators still run, but because of all the solar panels, CHPs, heat pumps, and geothermal heat installations, the capacity has increased enormously," says Hans, who has to admit that he has to get used to the mentality of the younger generation of horticulturists. "Their parents bought their generator from us because it had Boer on it, and it gave them a certain guarantee of quality. But the new generation then shows up wearing pointy shoes with their smartphones..."
Pointy shoes or not, everyone is treated nicely at Boer Berkel, which is why locals keep coming back to find the gensets and trailer specialist. "It's a coming and going here all day long," laughs Hans. The company has a long history. Over a hundred years ago, Hans Boer's grandfather Piet Boer opened a stove forge in Berkel en Rodenrijs. Over the years, he decided to focus more on selling aggregates. Later, his son Jo, Hans' father, took over the business, and now Hans himself has been at the helm for thirty years.
And what about the future? Although no successor is ready in the family, quitting is not yet on the cards for Hans. "You can't imagine the number of property developers who have all come here to take over this location in the village. But I refer them all to my real estate agent, and then I'll hear about it," laughs Hans. "I can sell gensets from any location and health allowing, I will continue to do that for as long as possible!"
