There is an accelerating demand from the market for substrates with greater amounts of renewable raw materials. This leaves little time to be well-prepared for the transition. Klasmann-Deilmann is working on developing an answer to that demand. That is why at Delphy Boomteelt's research nursery, demos are now taking place with substrates based on 50% and 100% renewable raw materials for tree cultivation. These substrate mixtures behave differently from known substrate mixtures. Monitoring the demos using Log & Solve and moisture sensors gives real-time insight into the moisture balance of the substrate mixture.
The transition to renewable raw materials is a big challenge for growers and suppliers. For each crop, Klasmann-Deilmann researches optimal mixtures with a higher share of renewable raw materials. In this research, it is important to know how the composition of the mixture affects, among other things, moisture management and the pH of the substrate. Log & Solve's sensors share real-time results in the dashboard and make it possible to develop a new feel for growing.
Using new mixtures requires a different way of watering to achieve optimal cultivation results. Rick van Marrewijk, product manager of Log & Solve, explains: "Using sensors, we identify strong fluctuations between wet and dry. An automated, efficient watering strategy based on measurements prevents these strong fluctuations. As a result, the plant experiences fewer stress moments and puts its energy into more uniform growth."
Delphy researcher Jeroen van der Meij shares his first experience: "Based on the real-time measurements, you get a feeling for the plant's water needs again. With the use of Log & Solve's sensors, you get to know the substrate's moisture turnover faster."
In Log & Solve's dashboard, users also add their own cultivation data. Weather data is processed automatically, so external weather conditions can also be included in the analysis. Growers learn about the properties of the substrate mixtures from the real-time measurements and use of the dashboard and develop a new feel for watering, fertilization, and nutrition. Log & Solve provides insight into cultivation and the effect of adjustments. The result is small steps towards a more sustainable substrate.
