Always wanted to grow anthurium cut flowers (or another crop) in Portugal? An anthurium cut flower greenhouse complex and the accompanying home villa are for sale in Obidos Village, about 80 km from Lisbon and close to the Atlantic coastline. In the 27.000 m2 greenhouse, which is located on a total property of 62.000 m2, 32 varieties of anthurium cut flowers are being produced and are exported to wholesalers in Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany. Despite cut anthuriums currently being produced in this greenhouse, the hydroponic installation offers the opportunity to switch to any kind of crop.
Regarding the motive of this offer, the owners, Osvaldo, and Edite Branco, say: "We can state that after 27 years of intense hard work, my wife and I have taken this important decision due to family and health reasons. This was not carried abruptly nor carelessly: we take great pride in achieving what we have up until today. It's time to change our lives and hand over the business to the next grower(s)."
Water resources
One steel water pipeline across the farm area brings a pressurized water flow from the River Dam- Arnóia to the greenhouse, explains Osvaldo.
"There are 2 main valves with a capacity of 200m3/hour and another of 100m3/h. Also, there are 2 subterranean water supplies equipped with pumps. Water is stored in 3 water silos with a total capacity of 420 m3.
Electricity and solar installations
When looking at the electricity, the farm has access to a high-voltage main power line from the National Grid. "We have 2 transformers that get the electricity directly from the main power line, assuring stable, reliable, and low fare rate energy supply."
Additionally, they have installed 312 solar panels on the roof of the main building generating a total of 45 Kw. "This covers about 40% of all the energy input."
Heating and cooling
To heat the greenhouse, there are 2 Electric Boilers of 450 Kw each and one Biomass Boiler. "All the greenhouses have piping systems, circulating pumps, and switchboards." And to cool the area, all greenhouses are equipped with a Pad&Fan cooling system and control switchboards.
Artificial Lighting
All the greenhouses are equipped with HPS 600 W projectors from Hortilux Schréder for artificial lighting. "Also, all the areas have thermal screens from Ludvig Sveenson for energy saving," he adds.
Water treatment & recycling
Osvaldo and Edite have installed 2 Van Dijk Ecoster Disinfecting Units and one Ozone Unit. "All the drain water that comes from the hydroponic beds is recovered for one water silo, saving water and expensive fertilizer as well saving the environment."
Hydroponic cultivation
The anthurium cut flowers are produced in special gutters that are filled with artificial substrates suitable for hydroponic cultivation, like Oasis and Perlite. "Those hydroponic beds are suitable to grow any kind of crop you desire." Additionally, there is a fertigation room with 2 Units running, one DGT Volmatic AMI 1000 and one Netafim Netaflex 4G that both control about 42 Electrovalves (sectors) in the greenhouses for drip irrigation, also from Netafim.
A multiple propose building
There is a building inside the property's main entrance with three offices, one canteen for the staff, and toilets for 30 employees on the ground floor. Also, there is a cooling chamber and a fertigation room. "It has 2 levels, the first floor is where the inverters from the solar panels are running and also where we have our store room and tools."

High quality, low costs
According to Osvaldo. The facility does not only produces top quality anthurium cut flowers year-round, but it also can do it at competitive costs. "The fact that the national wages are one of the lowest in the EU and because it is based at the Atlantic coast, we do not have high temperatures like in the South, which has a more Mediterranean climate. On top of that, in winter time, there are no negative temperatures, significantly reducing the energy inputs.
And the location has many renewable energy options; solar and wind breeze from the Atlantic gives the possibility of becoming self-sufficient in terms of energy sustainability. Today, about 40% of our needs are already covered, and after the new investment, the goal is 90% of total energy input will be from solar renewable energy. Electricity is affordable because it comes from the national power grid. The rate is the same that for big industry."
Export
Currently, the cut anthuriums are being exported to wholesalers in Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany, but as the transportation company in their group has a valid permit for freights all over Europe, expansion is possible.
The Home Villa placed inside the Real Estate
The Home Villa has s typical Mediterranean architecture (see drawing and photos above) with two complete suites, two guest rooms, one large living room, one dining room, 3 toilets, one gym, a big kitchen suite, and one outside grill kitchen. The total construction area is 440 m2 and has a 20 0m2 balcony. "The house is 14 years old and of top quality, built with natural stones." The garden area is 3.200 m2 and has a pool, which is not installed yet.
Also, it has a castle view and is surrounded by orchards. "It is a very nice and safe place about 10 minutes from the local beaches and 5 minutes from the village of Óbidos."
