US (NY): Landscaper turns vacant land in Slingerlands into a tree nursery

A landscaping company owner has opened a facility in Slingerlands to grow and sell plants, trees, and flowers for customers' yards.

The tree nursery at 927 Krumkill Road sits on nine acres, which Joe Becker, owner of Becker's Property Maintenance, bought in February. Visitors to the tree nursery, which celebrated its grand opening last week, can browse and buy plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees, with a community garden, florist shed, and entertainment area planned in the upcoming months.

A 28-year-old Voorheesville native, Becker said he dreamed of owning a tree nursery and running a landscaping company ever since he was a child. "I just always remember being outside. I was playing outside as a kid, I was always digging in my parents' yard, trying to design stuff."

Becker has spent a decade running his business. He not only bought the land for his company's headquarters but also realized his childhood dream and opened the tree nursery at the front section of the property. "Over the course of a couple of years, we grew big in the landscaping, we started doing patios and fencing and bigger landscape jobs with plant installations," Becker said. "And that kind of stemmed the idea of eventually wanting to have my own nursery, where we could stock items that customers love, and that we've been planting on customers' yards, but have a place for them."
