The colorful worlds of Fittonia

Have you ever admired a Fittonia in all its colorful glory? Chances are it was lovingly cultivated by the passionate Schoenmakers brothers. Schoenmakers Group BV has been dedicated to creating new, robust, and trendy variations of this popular indoor plant since 1985.

A Family of Growers
Schoenmakers is operated by 3 brothers from the Schoenmakers family. Their commitment to growing Fittonias has resulted in an impressive heritage of expertise. Over the past 38 years, they have not only cultivated Fittonias but also specialized in breeding these colorful plants. Through the years, Schoenmakers has bred more than 100 new varieties. Today, Schoenmakers is the sole Fittonia supplier in the Netherlands and the only Fittonia breeder in Europe.

Fittonia
The Fittonia is a plant native to the rainforests of South America. It belongs to the Acanthaceae family. This plant is one of the smaller indoor plants, reaching a height of 10-12 centimeters. Due to its unique and colorful appearance, the Fittonia is also known as the mosaic plant. Schoenmakers Nursery began with its own variety, the Fittonia Janita. The first proprietary variety (Josan) was named in honor of Jos and Anneke Schoenmakers, the founders of the company. Mother Anne received an additional tribute with the Anne line. Under this line, you can find beautiful varieties such as:

  • White Anne
  • Pink Anne
  • Snow Anne

Another remarkable creation is the Fittonia Flame line (including White Forest Flame, Pink Forest Flame, and Forest Flame), characterized by its pointed small leaves that stand compactly in the pot, resembling small stars.

Care
The Fittonia is originally a ground cover plant in the tropics. It thrives in our indoor climate at home or in the office. It can withstand some neglect, so if you forget to water it occasionally, it should be fine. Water the houseplant when the soil feels dry. At normal room temperature, this is usually once a week.

For Every Interior, a Colour
Schoenmakers has enriched the world of Fittonias with beautiful new varieties. At Schoenmakers, they like to say, "For every interior, we have a color." So, if you're looking for a trendy and robust addition to your collection, look no further than Schoenmakers' Fittonias, available at OZ Planten.
