Looking back at Lazzeri’s Open Days:

How Italian Poinsettias are made

At the end of 2023, Lazzeri’s Open Days took place in Italy. It is a biennial event that is dedicated to the Poinsettia, and according to CEO Adriano Gobetti, it lived up to the expectations. “Around 300 guests from all over Italy and abroad attended the open days, which included a company tour, a conference dedicated to the world of substrates, and a present and future varietal exhibition.” In this article an impression of the open days.

The event was preceded by a tasty dinner of churrasco, the typical grilled meat originating in Argentina and southern Brazil, in which Gobetti competed skilfully on the spit and grill, thanks to his Brazilian origins.

The company tour highlighted the special features that characterize Poinsettia production. All production processes, starting from hybridization to the planting of mother plants and ending with the rooting of cuttings, are carried out entirely in Italy. Lazzeri can proudly claim to produce 100% Italian Poinsettias. “This also allows close control of all production steps and ensures a high standard of quality and health.”

The conference dedicated to growing substrates highlighted the need to look for alternatives to peat to reduce peat extraction and thus protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions. Practical examples brought by the two speakers, Dr. Cattivello (ERSA-Friuli Venezia Giulia), one of the leading substrate experts in Italy, and the technical business professional Alex Tonen, showed that alternatives to peat, such as wood fiber or coco, can lead to an improvement in substrate quality in terms of root development and plant growth.

Andrea Lazzeri, Global Product Manager, accompanied visitors along the large exposure where all the varieties in the catalog and newly planned varieties were on display. Prominent among the featured varieties were the two 2022 introductions, Aida and Maestro, the first earlier with large, very showy bracts and excellent branching and the second later, with deep red bracts and robust branching with narrow V. This year, the Carmen variety was introduced and immediately received positive feedback: excellent shape with strong branches, large bright red bracts, and medium earliness, also suitable for large pot sizes.

Red is the color of Christmas, and the Poinsettia is the plant that best represents it, says Andrea Lazzeri. Red is also the color of passion, the passion that Lazzeri, with this event, has shown to put into at least three specific areas, he continues, namely: “A passion for caring for customers, opening the doors of the company, making people aware of working methodologies and offering a convivial dinner full of joy, a passion for quality, adopting a 100% Italian production process and employing all hygiene and control measures to achieve a healthy product, and a passion for innovation in the continuous creation and development of new varieties that better meet market needs.”
