UK: Chelsea Flower Show to add skatepark to 'encourage young people getting involved in horticulture'

In the genteel world of horticulture, it is usually the trees that are 'gnarly.'

But that could soon change as organizers of the Chelsea Flower Show plan to feature a skatepark for the first time this year in a bid to make gardening 'rad.' Long associated with more mature people and those with time on their hands, the delights of growing tomatoes and carrots are often lost on the young.

But the designers of an 'edible' garden featuring a granite skate ramp as its centerpiece hope to highlight links between 'skateboarding and cultivation' and draw in the youth. The move may horrify traditionalists who associate skateboarding with desolate concrete parks.

Rather than being a culture clash, its creators say it will help to get skateboarders involved in the rarefied world of horticulture and encourage young people to start growing vegetables.
