Kelly Funk, Jackson & Perkins, on their new garden rose collection Library of Roses

“This collection features a unique blend of heritage and innovation”

"In a time of growing attention for heritage plants, modern breeding and a keen interest in nostalgia, this collection seeks to preserve the sentimental and historical significance of classic and modern roses while meeting the evolving needs of gardeners," states Kelly Funk, President & CEO at Jackson & Perkins (J&P). Although garden roses are the main product of this US nursery, perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs are also part of their assortment. Recently, they introduced their Library of Roses. With this rose collection, they aim to offer a unique blend of heritage and innovation. In this article, you can learn more about this collection.

Heritage – historic varieties
According to Funk, the Library of Roses collection is a manifestation of almost a decade of work, re-establishing the annual release of roses from Jackson & Perkins. "We wanted to ensure that favorite and historic roses didn't fall from the record books but also create a place to release new roses to the market. To that end, the collection includes exclusive introductions, historically significant J&P-bred roses, globally sourced rare varieties, and, for the first time, Old Garden Roses—rose varieties that fit into classes of roses originating before 1867. These roses' superior genetics, modern breeding, plant health, breathtaking blooms, and unforgettable fragrances make them special," she explains.

Funk also offers some examples of the roses that should provide gardeners with a connection to the artistry and tradition of rose cultivation. The 'Old Garden Rose Collection', for instance, includes the Louise Odier Bourbon rose. Funk shares that this variety was developed in France in the late 1840s, and connects gardeners to the tradition of old-world roses as it symbolizes the romanticism and breeding focus of its time. She explains why this connection is important, saying: "It allows gardeners to experience the heritage, nostalgia, and timeless appeal of a pre-modern era of roses."

"This variety boasts nearly thornless stems and continuous blooms—a true heirloom with unmatched elegance."

Another example of a historic variety is 'White Delight' from the 'Vault Collection'. "This collection offers limited-edition, historically significant roses, providing a rare opportunity to own a piece of rose history before the roses and proprietary genetics are returned to our vault," Funk states.

New roses and looking ahead
However, it's not all about heritage and historic varieties. The Library of Roses also includes new roses as part of the 'Exclusive Introduction Collection' and the 'Roses Around the world Collection'. In the words of Funk these collections respectively showcase "cutting-edge breeding and rare, resilient, breathtaking roses from international breeders."

She is convinced that this combination of old and new roses makes that the Library of Roses collection offers something for every gardener - whether it's a passion for heritage roses, a love for global treasures, or the desire for modern varieties.

The Jackson & Perkins team continues to search for new and exclusive rose varieties to be prepared for the future. "The world around us is changing at an ever-increasing pace, and gardening retailers will have to anticipate the needs of their customers and be prepared to provide them with the products and information they need to be successful."

'Magenta Magic' is one of the roses of the Jacksons and Perkins 'Library of Roses Collection'.
