'Trending houseplants on Pinterest this January'

According to Pinterest data, Patch Plants found that the houseplants gaining the most popularity this January include peace lilies and spider plants. With their bright green foliage, both spider plants and peace lilies have key traits linked to wellbeing – especially important in the darker, colder winter months, states the Patch Plants team.

Kelly Dyer, the Plant Doctor at Patch Plants, explains how plants can lift our spirits: "Biophilia theory suggests that humans are born with an innate emotional connection to the natural world, and as such the presence of soft green leafy plants in our homes, especially during the winter months, can go a long way in improving our psychological and physical health. Studies show that houseplants help reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), improve our attention span and even battle fatigue."

Peace Lily

"Lush green leaves and soft foliage are said to be the plant features most associated with wellbeing, and so in January it's uplifting to see so much interest in peace lilies and spider plants as both these plants have these features in abundance."

Patch Plants shares that Pinterest's other trending plants, such as cactus and orchids, can also provide a well-needed winter well-being boost for other reasons. Whilst these plants typically lack flowing soft green foliage, their other attributes such as delicate flowers, intricate patterns and unusual shapes and textures can prompt mental stimulation and an appreciation of the natural world – attributes which plant doctor Kelly Dyer believes can help lift your mood.
