Mike Duivenvoorden, Duif Flowers

"Record flower exports to Sweden for International Women's Day"

"It's unbelievable," says Mike Duivenvoorden from Duif Flowers, a Dutch exporter of flowers and plants. "We've never exported so many flowers to Sweden for International Women's Day as we have this year. We have about thirty clients in Sweden, and for some of them, the demand is unprecedented." And the demand for flowers for International Women's Day is not only high in Sweden, Mike also notices an increase in demand in Austria and Estonia. Sweden stands out for reaching record-breaking levels for the first time.

Roses
According to Mike's Swedish clients, the surge in demand is largely due to the influx of Eastern European immigrants in certain neighborhoods, which has driven up the demand for flowers. And what types of flowers are being exported to Sweden? "Mainly roses, but also other flowers like germinis, santinis, and carnations. Whether it's Malmö, Gothenburg, or Stockholm, the demand varies per city. And quality is of key importance."

Flowers as a Luxury Product?
According to Mike, flower prices are currently through the roof. "I've never seen prices this high, but they're still being paid. The problem, however, is that fewer flowers are being bought despite the strong demand. This is causing frustration among Dutch florists, as it's becoming more difficult to make a profit. As a result, flowers are increasingly being treated as a luxury product, and that's definitely not something we want

Despite the frustrations and soaring prices, Mike is still attracting new customers in the Netherlands and beyond.
