On March 8, the 115th International Women's Day, was celebrated and it has become a more and more important festivity in China. As flowers are a popular gift for women, the flower market was particularly busy throughout the week. This year, with March 8 falling on a Saturday, people had more leisure time to visit flower markets with family and friends, further boosting flower sales.
According to data from the Kunming Flower Auction Center, the peak daily supply during the Women's Day season reached 7.29 million stems, with an average daily supply of 5.86 million stems—marking a 12% increase from last year.
Carnation, Gypsophila, cut roses, lilies, and tulips were the top flowers for Women's Day, with pink and white being the most popular colors. Sunflowers are normally used for Teachers' Day and Father's Day, but now some people also buy them for women. In the past, imported flowers such as roses from Kenya and Ecuador were very popular here too. However, with the improved quality of domestic flowers, the imported volume has decreased. However, there is still a market for luxury Ecuador roses as they have large flower heads and long stems. Regarding carnations, Yunnan Province produces 18.97 billion carnations annually, leaving no market space for imported varieties.
And the flower export has increased. Mr.Wang Chuliang from Kunming flower company shared: "During Women's Day, our company can supply 30,000 stems of cut flowers per day. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Russia, Korea, and Japan are our main destinations. In the past, we only sold raw materials; but this year, we also started to sell flower bouquets. Customers want more well-packaged flowers, this is a new trend. Compared with 2024, our exportation has increased by 20%."
