Royal Gardens Ltd., a part of the Avon Valley Floral group, scheduled an open house Tuesday to celebrate 50 years in business. The greenhouse, which has around 150 employees, is a wholesale supplier whose main crop is spring bedding plants for stores like Costco, Wal-Mart and Kent Building Supplies, according to Kevin Moss, general manager for New Brunswick operations.
"We supply everything that you would think of as a bedding plant, annuals," said Moss, who said they grow a fall crop of "garden mums," including chrysanthemums, and some poinsettias.
Avon Valley Floral is based in Falmouth, N.S., and maintains a group of companies that includes the Millstream Valley Gardens in Berwick, N.B. Moss said the chain also supplies cut flowers to smaller stores from other facilities.
According to founder Doug MacArthur, whose position now is vice-president of the floral group, 1973 Royal Gardens Ltd. opened in 1975 as a partnership between area greenhouse owners to open a fuel-efficient greenhouse range amid the 1970s energy crisis.
