US (OH): Wintersville shop owner sees shift towards durable gifts amid changing flower industry

Flowers are often the go to gift for Mother's Day. But if you are hoping to get those and something a bit more lasting, a local gift and flower shop in Wintersville has plenty of options. Exquisite Creations owner Joel John said the floral industry is a roller coaster and they often really rely on holidays like Mother's Day.

"Where we are really banking on these big holidays – Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter - all of the big holidays, those are the times when everybody else is relaxing and enjoying we are working to carry us through the seasons when it is not busy," John said.

As the economy shifts, so do customer preferences. John said he's noticed fewer people ordering fresh cut flowers and more leaning toward lasting gifts.

"A potted plant where, you know, mom can enjoy all summer out on the porch," John said. "You have those kinds of options. And even stuff that are household gift items, those are items you can keep and reuse. So, we have a lot of neat things at the shop."
