NL: The peony season is in full swing

According to Marty Star of My Peony Society, the peony season is going exceptionally well this year, especially after facing challenging conditions in recent years. The season has been in full swing for several weeks, with more than 100 varieties of peonies being sold daily.

"In recent years, we faced many weather-related issues, which led to diseases and overly wet crops," Marty explains. "This year, we've had a good season so far, partly because of a cold and dry winter. It allowed the peonies to rest. Now we have a gradual spring, enabling the peonies to slowly emerge and reach their full potential."

Plenty of choices
This has led to a market full of good, strong peonies. "We are now more in a supply-driven market. The quality is high, and prices are well balanced with the quality. There's a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and types available," Marty continues. "Last year, there was a scarcity: everyone wanted peonies, but the supply was too limited. This resulted in relatively high prices, while the quality was lower due to many diseases. That's not good for consumers. At some point, you can't justify the high prices anymore."

Influencers and florists
To further promote peonies and connect with florists and end customers, My Peony Society organizes various events and collaborations. "Florists may not be our direct customers, but we want to understand them and maintain contact for feedback," says Marty. Last Sunday, a Mother's Day event was held at TOF Bloemen in Amstelveen, where My Peony Society's peonies were the focus, and beautiful bouquets were created. Collaborations with influencers also play an important role in these efforts.

The harvest is expected to end in the first week of June, with best peonies available until the end of June.
