At Ammerlaan The Green Innovator, business is still going strong despite the fluctuating market for green houseplants. Kayleigh Ammerlaan attributes this success to their focus on quality and a diverse range of products. She explained, "While many notice a drop in sales for tropical houseplants, our emphasis on quality and variety keeps customer demand high, even when others may not experience the same success."

She explains: "We provide high-quality products at higher prices, which many customers still find appealing, even in a tougher market. However, small pot sizes, ranging from 13 to 19, have struggled and continue to do so. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many new nurseries emerged, including those that started growing tropical plants. The effects of this increase need to settle before the market stabilizes. Initially, plants were a big trend, but that has faded somewhat. Additionally, with the rising cost of living, people might choose to spend their money on things other than plants."
Sales are conducted almost entirely through direct channels, with only 2% going through auction. "Everything else is sold directly at standard daily prices," says Kayleigh. The plants are distributed to wholesalers, garden centers, cash-and-carry outlets, and DIY stores.
New greenhouse
Ammerlaan TGI is currently building a new greenhouse on the site of an old one. "We owned the old greenhouse, but had been renting it out for some time. It became outdated, so we decided to demolish and renovate it. Our aim is to consolidate the cultivation of all our Kentia palms, which are currently grown at two different locations, into one spot."
Kayleigh also notes a shift in the market for dracaenas. "We've observed increased demand and supply for dracaenas. It's already our main crop, but we're continuing to expand."
