The Dutch Lily Days are in full swing and the mood is positive, with a promising season ahead. Besides showcasing various lily varieties in the test greenhouses of the thirteen participating companies, there are also talks about the challenges the industry faces. These include issues like exchange rates, the US tariffs, and the public debate on crop protection in bulb cultivation in the Netherlands. Additionally, the growing demand for pollen-free lily varieties is another key topic of conversation.
A large number of Dutch bulbs are shipped to South America, where many growers supply the American market, growers that might feel the impact of the new US import tariffs. While no immediate negative effects have been noted yet, several exporters are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Exchange rates, indirectly tied to tariffs, also have an impact. The strong euro compared to the Chinese renminbi (RMB) makes Asian buyers more hesitant. One participant at the Dutch Lily Days noted, "Whenever Trump makes a statement or takes action, it quickly affects exchange rates. This uncertainty influences how buyers make purchasing decisions."
In the Netherlands, bulb cultivation faces challenges, especially because of negative news about the use of crop protection products. Many exporters are experimenting with organic methods.
Regarding the selection of lilies, there is a clear trend: the popularity of double and pollen-free lilies is on the rise. Nearly all participants now feature one or more of these types. The Rose Lily was among the first to become available, and since then, many new varieties have been introduced. The demand for these remains strong.
