Highlands Potplants takes over Portulaca cultivation from Sunfriends

"We continue Marcel's pride"

Highlands Potplants is set to take over the cultivation of Portulaca from Sunfriends. Starting next year, the first plants will be delivered from Highlands' own nursery on De Jonghlaan in the Netherlands. This ensures the continuation of this vibrant seasonal crop, which has been grown for many years with care and dedication by Marcel Persoon.

The collaboration between the two companies didn't come out of nowhere. "We've known Marcel for several years," says Nick Duijvestijn. "Now that he's stepping back from cultivating Portulaca in the 27 cm pot size—a format he specialized in—we at Highlands Potplants are happy to continue where he left off."

Knowledge transfer
While this isn't an entirely new crop for Highlands—they already grow Portulaca in 19 cm pots—it's still a significant step for the nursery, whose main crop is Agapanthus.

"Marcel produced an exceptionally high-quality product. That's the standard we aim to match," says Nick. "To ensure a smooth transition, Marcel will support us in the initial phase and share his knowledge. That way, we can maintain the high standards, preserve his legacy, and continue delivering top-quality plants."

Confidence
At Sunfriends, reliability and peace of mind for customers were always top priorities, and that dedication went a long way. "I have full confidence that Highlands Potplants will carry that same standard forward," says Marcel.

Nick and Mark conclude with a smile: "We're going to create the same beautiful 'gifts' Marcel always did—and we're ready to prove it."
