This season, the popular American reality competition show The Amazing Race made its way through Europe—and even stopped in the Netherlands. One of the challenges in the very first episode of Season 38 took place at Van der Wilt Gerbera's in Mijdrecht, where contestants faced a colorful and fast-paced floral task.
Inside the greenhouse, teams were asked to recreate a "diamond" — a rack filled with gerberas arranged in specific colors and varieties — exactly as shown in a model. That turned out to be quite a challenge. With dozens of varieties that often differ only subtly, the task required not just speed, but a sharp eye for detail.
Things became even more exciting when the lights in the greenhouse suddenly went out. Contestants had to continue searching for the right blooms by the light of their headlamps. Aad van der Wilt acted as the judge, carefully checking whether each team had selected the correct varieties. Several contestants had to head back into the greenhouse after discovering that a light pink or yellow gerbera wasn't quite the right one.
"It was fantastic to see how enthusiastic and competitive the participants were," says Aad van der Wilt. "Our gerberas were literally in the spotlight of a globally watched program — something we're incredibly proud of."
The episode aired at the end of September, giving millions of viewers around the world a glimpse into the colorful world of gerberas. In the Netherlands, the episode can be streamed on services such as Paramount+ via the CBS website. A short recap is also available on Van der Wilt Gerbera's YouTube channel.
