The Role

Sunniva has an exceptional opportunity for an entrepreneurial, motivated, and knowledgeable individual with experience in large-scale commercial greenhouse plant/vegetable production.  We are seeking a Head Grower to join our management team to lead the strategic direction and day-to-day activities of our large-scale, state-of-the-art cannabis grow operations (Glasshouse) in Cathedral City, CA.  The Head Grower will have expertise that encompasses greenhouse system design, plant nutrition, crop and pest management, greenhouse IT systems, software, sensors and controls, and staff training.  The Head Grower will lead a team of Growers, Growing Assistants and nursery staff to achieve optimal, continuous plant production using Lean Manufacturing principles and adhering to cGMP standards.


Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for the entire growing process from seeding to transplanting to insect control.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the entire Cultivation staff, determine staffing needs and participate in the selection, hiring, training and development of staff.
  • Be fully familiar with multi-zone, computer-controlled climate and hydroponic systems.
  • Responsible for product quality. 
  • Manage project activities throughout lifecycle, including the allocation of adequate resources, scheduling, documentation, budget, and other factors necessary for success.
  • Responsible for the overall climate and irrigation strategy for large-scale hydroponic cannabis grow facility.
  • Provide advanced technical guidance to Greenhouse personnel in the proper maintenance and care of mothers, propagations, young plants and flowering crops.
  • Track all project costs to ensure completion within budget; procure extra budget funding where necessary.
  • Recommend corrective actions such as removal of plants or remedial treatments as appropriate.
  • Organize project teams into suitable workgroups and guide the teams throughout their efforts to produce deliverables according to specification.
  • Conduct project post mortems in order to identify areas for improvement and make recommendations based on findings.
  • Ensure all company, client, and project policies, procedures, standards, etc., are adhered to.


Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in a relevant field like Botany, Horticulture or Agriculture.
  • 10+ years’ experience in large scale commercial vegetable greenhouse.
  • 2+ years of experience with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and yield optimization.
  • 2+ years of experience in cannabis cultivation or horticulture preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience with Rockwool or other growing substrate for hydroponic gardening.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Priva or other major climate control platforms (Argus, Hortimax, Agrotek etc.).


Skills, Knowledge, and Ability

  • Knowledge of large-scale commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, mediums, light requirements, temperature control, air flow, etc.
  • Knowledge of plant diseases, insects and fungi, as well as plant treatment options.
  • Must have accountability, proactive behavior, self-motivation, and strong attention to detail. 
  • Experience or knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, cGMP standards and continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances and legislation, including health and safety.
  • Commitment to working in a team environment, with established team building abilities.
  • Results-oriented individual with the ability to interpret and effectively manage multiple and competing priorities and time lines.
  • Highly effective negotiation, diplomatic, and conflict resolutions skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate with all types of staff, including laborers, technical, professional, and upper management.
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with business units, corporate departments, key managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a budget, P&L, and exercise necessary cost control measures.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, etc.) and email.
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP systems.
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines.

Working Environment

  • The position will be located within the Greenhouse facility.
