Sandra Medina, Natura Breeders, on their new line named Thrill:

Shaking up the carnation palette with new colors

When one thinks of carnations, reds, whites, pinks and yellows as main colors, pop into your mind. However, in a world where everyone is looking for something new, Colombian carnation breeding company Natura Breeders took the leap and started to investigate different colors suitable for modern arrangements. At the Proflora show in Colombia, they presented their “Thrill®" line for the first time and again at the IFTF in the Netherlands. So far, they are pleased with the reactions they received.

A dull color? Not at all!
“Dark colors were perceived as something dull not suitable for the cut flower market", explains Sandra Medina of Natura Breeders, "therefore, the aim of our breeders was to create a color that is versatile and keeps catching the eye, making the contrast with lighter colors." About 5 years ago, the first carnation of such kind came out of the selection and that is where the story began. "Most breeders were not believing in the commercial possibility of a range like this, but when we saw this color, we thought why not?! And we started to develop a line."

Something new in carnation color
"Thrill line is composed of several varieties with innovative colors, the color range is between plum-violet to copper; many varieties have petals with metal reflections and all are bringing something new in carnation color assortment."

How to use?
They noticed that the Thrill line does very well in floral compositions.  "It really enables the bright colored flowers in the arrangement to pop out." However, also standing alone, Medina hears positive reactions. "These flowers have reflections and during the blooming process color changes showing unexpected shades and lasting for very long."

Naming the line
Once several varieties were developed, the next question was, how to name the line? "We thought of several names, but we could not find the right one. Therefore, at the IFTF 2018, we showcased several of these varieties and asked visitors to propose a name. And in all the great submissions, we found a name that covers it all, namely "Thrill". We registered it in most of the countries as trademark in order to identify the varieties.

Award winner
At the Proflora 2017 show in Bogotá, Colombia, they submitted one of their Thrill varieties for the breeders’ competition. And in the category standard carnation breeders, they received the first prize. At that time, the carnation they submitted was still a code so they named it Winner THRILL®. Currently, the line consists of 8 varieties and there are more in the pipeline to come.

Production worldwide
Natura Breeders is the breeding company which developed this innovative line, they are investigating to find new colors and new types of carnations and other products. The intention of the company is not to overflood the market with these varieties, in order to allow growers to sell the flowers with high prices to the most specialized and demanding customers all over the world.
