Novelties at the FlowerTrials 2015:

Highlighted: Volmary, DHM, Hishtil, Prudac, Cohen, Butterfly Garden, Jaldety, GGG Grünewald, Beekenkamp

The FlowerTrials 2015 was a good opportunity for breeders and propagators to show growers their new and existing varieties. The event was held last week in the Netherlands and Germany, and attracted many international visitors. Not only growers from Europe, but from all over the world came to the FlowerTrials to see the newest trends in the pot- and bedding plants sector. Mixes, scented flowers, improved varieties and much more was presented at the FlowerTrials 2015, that was held in the Netherlands and Germany last week. 49 companies opened their doors. We have already published an extensive Photo Report of the FlowerTrials. In this article, we will highlight some companies that presented their novelties in the Westland region, the Netherlands: Volmary, DHM, Hishtil, Cohen, Butterfly Garden, Jaldety


Bernd Krämer of Volmary with the Soul concept. Regarding herbs, Volmary supplies growers with ideas to combine three different herbs in a Soul FOOD pot to create a specific taste. “With this combination, the grower can offer the consumer a specific flavor, for example “pizza flavor”.

Upper right: The April Night of Volmary flowers early, middle/end April. The cultivation period approximately 10 weeks. This April Night is grown in a polytunnel. Bottom right: ‘Winter Wonders’ (Calendula x hybrida) is a new series of Volmary consisting of three colours. The cultivation period is 10-12 weeks. This Calendula attracted much attention at the FlowerTrials.

Some novelties and existing varieties of DHM: Upper left: On the left Tourmaline 'Deep Rose' Lanvirginia. It is a very compact plant. In the Middle Agathe 'Red Velvet' Lanalabama. A climbing plant with deep red flowers. Can grow 2-3 meters high. Tourmaline 'White with Pink Eye'. Of DHM. Upper right: The flower of the Tourmaline 'Deep Rose' Lanvirginia of DHM. Bottom left: The Opale of DHM. In 2011 it was awarded with the best innovation at the IPM. Bottom right: The flower of the Tourmaline 'White with Pink Eye' van DHM.

Some novelties of Hishtil: Upper left: Scabiosa 'Kudo'. At the Spring Trials in California it was awarded with the Editor's Choice award. Upper right: The FunTaStick Pepper tree is a product developed by Hishtil’s R&D department. It is a unique grafted plant, which Hishtil has a worldwide patent for. The FunTaStick can be placed in a window sill or patio. As well as the ornamental appearance, the peppers are also suitable for consumption. The Medusa variety has a sweet flavor and sharp tip, and the Conic variety has a refined spicy flavor. Bottom left: The 'Traffic light'. It is all in the name: the plant has the colors of the traffic lights; red, orange, green. Bottom right: The Salicronia has a salt flavor. It can be eaten raw or quickly fried, steamed or microwaved.

Some novelties of Cohen: Upper left: Petunia Happy Magic Giant Dijon of Cohen. This petunia won the OFA retailers choice award in 2014. Upper right: Petunia Happy Classic Pink Picotee of Cohen. This Petunia attracted a lot of attention at the FlowerTrials. The plant has pink flowers with a large white edge. Bottom left: Bidens Bee Giant Yellow of Cohen. This Bidens is compact and has large flowers. Also this plant received a lot of attention during the FlowerTrials. Bottom right: 5 new varieties in the Tiara series of Cohen.


Jaap Zeelenberg represents Butterfly Garden at the FlowerTrials. In the picture: the Lavendula Stoechas. This lavender has a large amount of flowers, keeps flowering and flowers multiple times.

Some novelties of Jaldety: Upper left: Upper left: The Salvia Love and Wishes of Jaldety. This is a new color addition in the Salvia series. A part of the royalties goes to a charity. Upper right: Ganzia SunBathers Totonaca of Jaldety. This is the most popular variety of the Ganzia series. The plant has large flowers, uniform habits, many flowers. The flowers are well filled. Bottom left: De Delosperma Hot Pink van Jaldety is a low compact variety. Bottom right: Thunbergia Alata Arizona Terracotta is a new colour addition; terracotta flowers with a dark centre. The large amount of terracotta flowers will last from spring to autumn. They are suited for mixed hanging baskets and pyramids for patio and decks, and a showy cover for arches and pergolas.

Some novelties of GGG Grünewald: Upper left: De Dream of Spring mix of GGG Grünewald. Upper right: This is a complete new series of GGG Grünewald and attracted a lot of visitors' attention; The Torelus. The Torelus flowers early and 12 cm pots can be cultivated in 5 weeks. The series consists of bright colors; at the moment: 2 white, 2 yellow, orange and red. Bottom left: The Lovely Dream Verbena Mix. The white verbenas in the mix have a flavor of Vanilla. The verbenas are compact and stand up straight. They all bloom at the same time. Buttom right: Dianthus Rose Red Single of GGG Grünewald. The flowers are right above the leaves. There was a lot of interest in this plant at the FlowerTrials.


Perry van der Haak van P. v.d. Haak. The new pelargonium varieties are around the Porsche; five new varieties: Paula, Eva, Kasech en Emma.


In the back: Emma Improved. (improvement of an existing variety, smoother colour, stronger leaves) In front of the Emma: Lara Improved (improvement of an existing variety). In front: Paula (double flowered, improvement of existing variety, flowers earlier, better branching, is available for growers in January).


In front: Eva (stays white, flowers earlier than the current variety). Behind Eva: Kasech (Zonal, dark leaves and is a new color in the 'eyes series').

Some novelties of Beekenkamp: Upper left: The Tomtato. On the bottom potatoes are grown and on top tomatoes. Upper right: Beauvilla White is compact, branches from the centre. This white one is the most demanded. Bottom left: Waterfall Pastel Pink of Beekenkamp. Bottom right: Celosia Fire Purple Violet. This is a new color addition to the Celosia Fire series. The series consists of 6 colours at the moment.
