Producing cannabis for medical use

Danish nursery Nealdebakken turning into Spectrum Cannabis

The 40,000 m2 greenhouse of former Danish nursery Naeldebakken is currently being turned into a production location of cannabis for medicinal use by Spectrum Cannabis Denmark ApS. This company is a joint venture between one of the largest cannabis companies in the world, Canopy Growth, and a European hemp producer Danish Cannabis ApS. They expect to have the first plants in the greenhouse within a month and are expected to serve approximately 60,000 patients.

On December 4th, 2018, Naeldebakken was declared bankrupt and as the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes has been legalized in Denmark (1st of January 2018) Spectrum Cannabis Denmark decided to buy Naeldebakken's property in Odense and rebuilt it to a production location.

But why did Canopy Growth choose for Denmark? "Denmark is an ideal country for greenhouse cannabis production because of the abundant availability of experienced greenhouse producers and labourers. Odense was specifically chosen because of the support of the greenhouse industry that exists in the area", the company stated in a press release of Canopy Growth last December.

Besides that, Chairman and CEO Bruce Linton mentioned: "In Denmark, we see a strong pharmaceutical industry with an equally strong research tradition as well as a skilled labour pool and attractive energy rates. Based on these foundational aspects and with the expertise of our partners at Danish Cannabis, I am confident we will build upon our global success here in Denmark."

The greenhouse is currently being rebuilt and a factory and laboratory will be added. When finished, the company is expected to employ over 100 staff, including some former growers who will be offered employment with the Company.

"The greenhouses are completely empty at the moment, the floors and benches, everything is pulled out to create a state-of-the-art greenhouse that is suitable for medicinal cannabis production", says Bent Hansen, former Sales Manager at Naeldebakken, who will also be working for Spectrum Cannabis Denmark.

Since the legalization of cannabis production for medical use in Denmark, the interest for this crop increased. "Currently, around 11 companies in Denmark got the allows to start growing and I think around three will start producing this year", says Hansen. As all companies are still in their start-up phase, the government gave allows to them to try out the cultivation of cannabis for medical use for four years.

The Spectrum Cannabis products are based on the simple doctor and patient friendly Spectrum system, which classifies products from high THC to balanced THC and CBD products to high CBD-only products. Throughout 2018, the Company intends to introduce its range of products in dried form for inhalation, as well as cannabis oils and Softgel capsules, an offering currently only available through Canopy Growth's subsidiaries, Spectrum Cannabis and Tweed.
