US (FL): 80 percent of all imported cut flowers flown into Miami's airport
The Broward County port ranks No. 1 among seaports in Florida for international trade in bananas, melons and other perishables — with much of the refrigerated imports destined for local consumers.
South Florida serves as a major U.S. hub for perishables trade, handling billions of dollars per year and literally tons of medicine, liquor, perfume, fruit, vegetables, fish and other goods — often bought and sold with Latin America and the Caribbean. That includes about 80 percent of all cut flowers imported into the U.S., mainly roses and other stems flown from South America into Miami's airport.
