"Russia: "Weak ruble larger concern than border checks"
Last weekend FloraHolland spoke with many exporters about their experience with purchases for the first day of school in Russia.
Most of the exporters who trade primarily with Russia have sold about the same amount as last year. Exporters who sell only part of their production to Russia admitted that the trade with Russia had decreased somewhat. Almost all of the products arrived, although some were delayed for a time at the border. So the school year in Russia will start with flowers again.
Most exporters expect that the situation in Russia regarding the admittance of export products will persist for a while longer. The exchange rate of the ruble is a greater concern for many exporters than the delay at the border. Flowers are becoming increasingly expensive for Russian consumers due to the drop in the value of the ruble.
The sales via FloraHolland on Monday decreased by 7.5% for houseplants and by 20% for cut flowers compared with the same day last year. The latter group did experience a 5% increase in the number of items sold. These figures are based on the total sales, not specifically on the trade with Russia.
FloraHolland is monitoring the developments in export to Russia daily and working together with LTO, VGB and VBN to limit the negative consequences of the stricter controls for the sector.
