Sneak peek California Spring Trials

What to expect at the California Spring Trials 2016? In the coming weeks FloralDaily.com will highlight one product from each participating company in a series of five articles. In this edition, we show the top products from 11 companies in Northern California, USA.

The California Spring Trials is a week-long event held at various locations throughout California, from April 9-14. Breeders, growers and suppliers will showcase their newest varieties and products.

Danziger Dan Flower Farm - Amore Queen of Hearts



The Amore Queen of Hearts is a Petunia that is decorated with heart shapes on every flower. This petunia has a long flowering period and fits well in a pot, a basket or a big container. The Amore Queen of Hearts is part of the new AMORE series from Danziger. The petunias in this series are known for their semi-trailing growth habit, large colorful flowers, contrasting stripes, heart shaped design, and a long flowering period. Benary - Funky Pink



Funky Pink is Benary’s new compact semi-trailing interspecific begonia. The breeding idea behind this new begonia was to create a novelty begonia type from seed that forms nice baskets but is also easy to ship and can be transported without damaging the plants. Funky Pink is the outcome to those requirements set by Benary breeding and flowers all summer long until frost. This is the first color of this compact semi-trailing interspecific begonia; more colors are in the pipeline for the coming years. The Funky Pink will be available at retail in the 2017 season. Cohen - Calibrachoa Caloha Classic Yellow Red Ring



The Calibrachoa Caloha Classic Yellow Red Ring is a new addition to the Caloha range of classic, compact, double and grand types of Cohen. All types have good basal branching. The classic types are more vigorous and are good for hanging baskets. The compact types have shorter internodes and are great for pot production with no need for PGR. The entire series is produced from clean virus-free stock and bred by Breier, exclusively for Cohen. PAC-Elsner - pac Spanish Wine Rosé



One of the new varieties that PAC-Elsner will present at the California Spring Trials is the pac Spanish Wine Rosé. This Pelargonium is part of the Pelargonium Zonale Line pac Dark line. This dark green leaved Zonale line is robust against botrytis and allows more plants per square meter in production. They also withstand transport well, as both young plant and finished plant, and have a good shelf life. The contrast of the dark leaves with the bright flowers makes this pelargonium stand out in the gardens. Proven Winners - Superbells Tropical Sunrise Calibrachoa



The Superbells Tropical Sunrise Calibrachoa is a new variety from Proven Winners. It offers a special color pattern of orange, pink and coral tones along with a rounded habit. The flower coverage is better than Superbells Tequila Sunrise and the blooms appear even earlier. The flowers are held well above the foliage and the Tropical Sunrise has been screened specifically for resistance to Thielaviopsis. It grows 6-10” in height with a spread of 12-24”. American Takii - Cannova Bronze Scarlet




The Cannova Bronze Scarlet is a novelty of American Takii. This plant is part of the Cannova F1 (Canna x generalis), the first F1 Canna from seed. According to Takii, this is the earliest flowering Canna series on the market and is available from April. All plants in the Cannova series show healthy growth and good branching, which results in nicely filled pots and a good looking end product. Unique about the Cannova is the fact that it can be cultivated in a small pot from 12 cm, next to larger pot sizes and containers, as a fully flowering plant. It can also be used as bedding plant or patio plant The plant is a tropical plant but has good garden presentation in countries with a moderate summer climate, like the Netherlands. Beekenkamp - Begonia Evi Bright Pink



A novelty of Beekenkamp is the begonia elatior type for indoor and outdoor use, called Begonia Evi Bright Pink. Evi is a strong girl and is often the last (wo)man standing in the garden. She has bright pink flowers, which makes for a good contrast with the dark foliage. This plant is ideal for the 5-7 inch pots with a height of 10-12 inches. Thompson and Morgan - Cosmos Bipinnatus 'Lemonade'



The new Cosmos Bipinnatus 'Lemonade' is a different color in the Cosmos range of Thompson and Morgan, which has yellow and white bi-colored blooms. The plant produces lots of flowers throughout the summer on reasonably compact and well-branched plants. It creates a colorful display in containers and borders. Final garden height is 60cm / 24in. HilverdaKooij - MOOODZ



HilverdaKooij is new at the California Spring Trails. At the trials, they will present an entirely new echinacea series, called MOOODZ. The plants in the MOOODZ series produce full plants in a period of 12-13 weeks. The color of the flowers is fresh and bright. Golden State Bulb Growers - Peppermint Twist



Peppermint Twist is one of the novelties from Golden State Bulb Growers. This new calla produces special colored blooms with shades of salmon to rusty red. The blooms are held above maculated foliage on long stems. It is a highly floriferous variety. Peppermint Twist is a good choice for cut flower production. So, it can be used for pot or cut use. Jaldety - Pelargonium Pinki Pinks



The new Pelargonium Pinki Pinks from Jaldety is an evergreen perennial with long flowering season, lots of pink flowers from early spring to late autumn, drought resistant, attracts butterflies, low maintenance. It is a good plant for hanging baskets, trails over the side of containers, small ground cover, rock gardens, window and patio boxes.
