Grasses find their way into 'easy gardens'

All over the world, a shift can be noticed towards easy-to-grow plants, both indoors and outdoors. Especially the younger generation has a so-called easy garden in which grasses are becoming a more significant feature. For Frank de Greef of Fleurizon, the grass market has expanded enormously over the last 3-5 years. This US brokerage firm sells starter material of grasses and other plants to growers all over the US and Europe.

Increasing demand
"Our customers are telling us they need more and more material to meet the market demand", says De Greef. So, over the years, Fleurizon has built up quite a large assortment of grasses. "We invest a lot of time in traveling around the globe in search for the newest and most extraordinary varieties. In the USA and in Europe we carry about 250 different varieties from different farms", says De Greef.

According to De Greef, there is a nice variety in grasses available. "There are short ones (Carex, Festuca), tall ones (Pennisetum some varieties, Miscanthus) and at the same time new grasses are being developed by breeders. "A new variety that the company is introducing is Hameln Gold, and some Miscanthus varieties.

And in the same 'lansdscaping' group of plants Fleurizon is dedicated to shipping quality Ophiopogon and Liriope varieties. They are also coming with new varieties like Ophiopogon Blackbeard (2017, very limited supply). "This Blackbeard is a faster growing and taller plant than nigrescens, with the same great black foliage", he says.

The different grass varieties and more plants are showcased at Fleurizon's booth 2714 at the Cultivate'16 in Columbus, USA (OH) from July 10-12.
