Ethiopia: Agri-Lake Flowers' new greenhouse ready for planting

Ethiopian rose farm Agri-Lake Flowers is expanding its greenhouse acreage. An irrigation system has just been installed in their new 6 ha greenhouse and they expect to plant the first rose varieties next week, on December 15, 2016. "In 2017, we will continue expanding the greenhouse to 10.7 ha", says Senait Anbesso, Manager of Communication and Training Service at Ethio Agri-CEFT Plc, the parent company of the rose farm Agri-Lake Flowers.

New greenhouse
The new 6ha greenhouse is added to Agri Lake Flowers' existing 5ha greenhouse. This greenhouse, which is manufactured and installed by Richel Group (locally represented by Irrico), is part of their 10.7ha project which will be completed in 2017. Then, they will be able to increase their annual production volume by 167 percent. "In the 5ha greenhouse we are currently growing 6 million stems a year and this 6ha greenhouse will increase the annual production to 11 million stems and eventually, when the 10,7 ha greenhouse will be finished we expect to produce 16 million stems a year", he says.

More expansions to come
And there are more expansion plans in the pipeline. When this 6ha greenhouse is in production, they will continue to expand, as they are committed to a five year strategic plan. Within five years, they plan to cover 30 ha, of the total 50ha landholding, with cut roses. So, 19 ha still needs to be added. "In 2017, we are planning to complete this project and expand the 6ha greenhouse to 10,7 ha. In 2018 another 14 ha will be added," says Anbesso.
