US (CA): Floricultura builds 2 ha greenhouse at Salinas

Dutch orchid breeder and propagator Floricultura has built a new greenhouse of two hectares at its US location. Floricultura Pacific, the company's American branch, has been producing starting material for orchids at the nursery in Salinas, California since 2011.

The North American orchid industry has taken major strides in terms of professionalism. This development coincides with increasing demand for orchids in the North American market. However, the desired product specifications are not the same as those in Europe. While in Europe, starting material is virtually completely sold as cuttings, in the US there's also demand for materials in a 12 cm pot.

By expanding its location in Salinas, Floricultura says it contributes to further professionalization of the industry, and is better able to respond to demands of American growers. The added greenhouse acreage - since 2011 the breeder has already been using 4 hectares of greenhouse - enables Floricultura to deliver plants as cuttings but also in a 12 cm pot: as coolable or branched plant. Floricultura thus aims to attain a bigger market share.
