More highlights from the CAST 2017

The California Spring Trials (CAST) is a good opportunity for breeders and propagators to show growers, distributors and retailers their new and existing varieties. The event was held from April 1-6 at several locations throughout California and attracted many visitors from across the country. We have already published an extensive Photo Report of the Trials. In this article, we will highlight the following four companies: HilverdaKooij, American Takii, Sakata and Dümmen Orange.

HilverdaKooij

Co Overduin and Jeroende Kuijer of HilverdaKooij. Kuijer is holding the new White Dahlia. According to him, there are not so many pure white dahlias on the market.

Clockwise: Hellebore Winterbells has been introduced about four years ago in the USA. The plant on the picture is growing in California for three years now and is still flowering. According to Kuijer, most hellebore only flower during colder periods, but this one is doing well in California too. The plants in the Carnation Flow line all have the same growing behavior. It has a large flower and can be grown in pots of 12cm and upwards. Alstroemeria Inticancha Moon was introduced last year, but had a limited availability. This year, larger amounts are available. Beaties Elegant Dianthus has been introduced about two years ago in Europe and last year in the USA. It is a series that retains color very well; about 10 days.

American Takii

It is the first year that Takii America is rolling out a pollinator friendly porgramm. They supply graphics as ideas for growers and stores. This Salvia 'Summer Jules Lavender', for example is pollinator friendly. On top of that, it is also a AAS Regional Winner. Actually, the entire series is made up of AAS Winners. The Summer Juwel Pink, Red and White are all AAS Winners.

Sakata

Alicia Suits of Sakata with the new Petunia SuperCal. It combines well with petunia and calibrachoa. For the grower, Supercal is early blooming, pH tolerant and good for cold-frame/low-energy production. For the retailer, non-sticky foliage provides a cleaner look, strong roots keep leaves greener under stress, and crisp vibrant flowers provide higher sell-through. For the consumer, good garden performance under all kinds of weather - from unexpected late frosts, to rainy-wet cycles and even through the high heat of summer.

Clockwise: The Candy Tops Snapdragon is a dwarf plant with strong stems, upright habit and has constant blooms all season long. The entire series, consisting of five colors, is new. The new AAS and Fleuroselect winner Profusion Red. According to Suits, it is the truest red on the market. Stock Mime is a new series that consists of five colors. It is early to bloom with approximately 55% double flowers. According to Suits, this is quite high for Stock. Grandio Blue with Botch is a new variety in the existing pansy series. According to Suits, the true blue color makes it a special variety.

Dümmen Orange
