Rosa Eskelund, Rosa ApS:

Europe: 'More exclusive potted roses for Mother's Day'

'For our Mothers, only the very best are good enough.' It might sound a bit cliche, but there seems to be a grain of truth in it. According to Danish potted rose breeder and grower Rosa Eskelund of Rosa ApS, the more exclusive and expensive mini potted roses were in high demand this Mother's Day (May 12).

Harley Eskelund and Rosa Eskelund. Rosa, a rose breeder who has licensed growers all over the world, also grows her own potted roses (the brands Roses Forever and Infinity) with her husband Harley Eskelund. In a 35,000 m2 greenhouse in Aarhus, Denmark they produce about 5 million potted mini roses of which 95 percent is being exported, mainly to Europe.

Mother's Day, celebrated on May 12 in many countries, is the most important day for their potted rose farm. "We do not only experience a high demand for potted mini roses, but consumers are also more eager to spend money on this holiday." The consumers seem to choose for the larger, more exclusive and therefore more expensive potted mini roses. "For Valentine's Day, for example, we grew and sold a lot of Forever Roses potted mini roses in a 6 cm pots. For Mother's Day, in contrast, the Infinity potted miniroses in 12-15 cm pots of the brand were in high demand."

And these Infinity roses in large pots were the first to be sold out, even though they are the most expensive roses in their assortment. "The standard Infinity roses are produced in 10.5 cm pots and especially for Mother's Day, we produced them in 12-15 cm pots. In November 2016, all Infinity roses were already sold out for April and May", says Rosa.

She and her husband are growing potted mini roses for about 30 years now and over the years, they noticed that there has always been a higher interest for the more expensive and exclusive potted roses for Mother's Day.

Infinity series
The Infinity line is a series of four potted mini rose varieties with large flowers and uniform growth. The production time is 9-10 weeks and it seems to be an easy crop to grow. The series currently consists of five colors; white, rose, pink, green and yellow. According to Eskelund, the white and pink varieties are still the most popular ones.
