Kenya: Naivasha Horticultural Fair in less than two months

In less than two months, the fifteenth edition of the Naivasha Horticultural Fair will take place. Companies from all over the world are exhibiting at the fair and the organization aims to attract many small scale growers, which is a big market in Kenya. The fair will be held outdoors from September 15-16, 2017 at the Naivasha Sports Club in Naivasha, Kenya.

Small scale grower
"In Kenya, there are about 10 million small growers, so a very big market in small packets", says Richard McGonnel, Chairman of Naivasha Horticultural Fair. For this reason, they are this year again trying to attract these smaller scale growers to the show. "We have seen that increasingly more small scale growers are showing their interest in the professional horticultural market." Last year, McGonnel and his team also have put effort into attracting this group and it has been a good initiative, they were pleased with the number. In total, last year's edition welcomed 3,500 visitors.

Another aim of the Fair is to improve and increase their customer/client base. "This will be the fifteenth year of doing so. Last year we had 160 professional stands and 30 charity stands", says McGonnel.

Growing industry
According to McGonnel, the Kenyan horticulture industry continues to grow. Kenyan farmers have had a challenging year with the drought and so on, but even though, for most Kenyan farmers, it generally has been a good year, so the money is in circulation."

Kenyan elections
The fair will be held some 6 weeks after the elections in Kenya, but no worrisome situations are expected. "Here in Kenya, we have our General election in early August and we all feel that between all the political ďHot AirĒ there seems to be a good feeling of an exciting but peaceful election. N H Fair is some 6 weeks after elections, so we all feel the "dust will be settled by then", says McGonnel.
