China: Balcony gardening boom triggers demand for liquid fertilizer and growing media

For a city as densely populated as Guangzhou, China, it is too extravagant for its citizens to have a private garden. However, space limit can hardly dampen their enthusiasm for gardening, and consequently balcony gardening is now swiftly catching on in not only Guangzhou but almost every fashionable metropolis.

Liquid fertilizer demand continues to climb
And thanks to this balcony gardening boom, liquid fertilizer sales is now on fire due to its easy application. According to data from China Agri-Production News, between 2012 and 2015, China’s water soluble fertilizer annual consumption had doubled from 610,000 tons to 1.22 million tons which had made big enough an incentive for Chinese manufacturers to double their annual output from 600,000 tons to 1.2 million tons. It has even been predicted that within the next few years the global bio-stimulant market will have a continuous annual growth of over 10% to USD 2-3 billion and China, possibly the biggest market of all, will take up USD 400-500 million market share.

Government’s strong advocacy for fertigation
But what has given the decisive spur to multiply soluble fertilizer sales is the government’s endorsement for fertigation. To cut down on water waste by irrigation and mitigate water pollution by chemical fertilizer, the government has been strongly espousing the use of fertigation ever since 2012. This January the Ministry of Agriculture of PRC unveiled its new goal for fertigation popularization: by 2020 fertigation should be applied to at least 100 billion sq.m farmlands, up by 80 million sq.m.

Domestic experts predict great potential
Many Chinese scholars feel bullish about liquid fertilizer and believe it has the potential to prevail in the market. Mr. Zhang Chenglin, Director of Plant Nutrition & Fertilization Research Unit of South China Agricultural University, commented that compared with developed countries, such as US, France, Germany, Israel, etc where liquid fertilizer has already taken a mainstream position, China harbors greater possibilities and potential for liquid fertilizer application.

Besides soluble fertilizer, growing media like coco peat, potting soil, etc, is another hot selling home gardening item imported by large quantity from India, Sri Lanka, Japan, etc. to China every year.
