How to deal with root-bound plug liners

Overgrown and root-bound plug liners are a part of the business. If given the choice, most growers would tell you they'd rather have a plug that's overgrown versus one that is underdeveloped. A well developed crown always results in a better looking plant, and a root-bound plug doesn't stop you from getting there. Here is a friendly reminder from Walters Gardens not to overlook this important step when receiving your plants this coming spring.

When your plug appears to be more root than soil, simply scoring each side with a utility knife will help to break up the root ball. This will help the roots to spread through the container quicker and result in a better plant for your customer. The plug can be planted and grown successfully without cutting the roots, but this can add a few weeks to achieve a finished product.
