Fabian Philippart, FleurAfrica:

"Kenya: "Valentine's Day will be better than last year"

Valentine's Day (February 14) is less than a month away, and the preparations at flower growers are in full swing - at Kenyan rose farm FleurAfrica as well. According to Managing Director Fabian Philippart, it will be better than last year. "The weather conditions and the exchange rates are more favorable this year." On top of that, last year's expansion of this Naivasha farm enables them to meet this year's increased demand.

Weather
Last year during this time of the year, many Kenyan growers suffered from hot temperatures that affected the crop. "Here in Naivasha, the temperatures were extraordinary high, which resulted in a production that came too early and with shorter stems", says Philppart. This year, however, the temperatures seem to be better and in turn result in a higher quality crop. "They aren't as high as last year which enables the crop to develop better and get stronger and longer stems."

Exchange rate
Not only the weather conditions have become more favorable, the exchange rates have become too. FleurAfrica supplies its roses all over the world and they suffered from the weak currencies in Europe last year. "Europe is an important market to us and last year, we had to deal with the Brexit which put pressure on the British pound and the euro was weaker too. Now, these currencies are stronger against the Kenyan shilling which means that we receive more money with same prices."

Meeting demand
Another issue for Valentine's Day 2017 was the ability to meet the demand. "The combination of a high demand and a production that came too early, we were not able to meet the demand", says Philippart. For this reason, they decided to expand their 35 ha greenhouse with 5 ha. "With a total production area of 40ha - and if everything goes as planned - we will meet this year's demand. At the moment, we are well on schedule."

What's to come
Right after Valentine's Day, which is the most important day of the year for FleurAfrica, they will start preparing for Mother's Day (celebrated on Sunday May 13, 2018 in many countries). At the same time, they will review their results of Valentine's Day and decide if they are going to further expand the farm. "We are eager to increase the farm by 5 to 10 ha a year and grow till 70ha", he says.
